Castrum di Castelnuovo Val di Cecina - Pisa in Toscana
All’estremità meridionale della provincia di Pisa, situato in posizione panoramica a 576 metri s.l.m., sullo spartiacque tra la Val del Cecina e quella del Cornia, Castelnuovo V. C. si presenta come un suggestivo borgo medievale a forma di pigna. Il borgo si presenta arroccato sulla collina intorno ad un primitivo nucleo fortificato, disposto per semianelli concentrici e conserva intatto l’antico impianto urbanistico, dominato dalla chiesa di SS. Salvatore che sorge ove si ergeva il castello.
In epoca comunale la storia di questo borgo è legata a quella di Volterra: gli abitanti di Castelnuovo, prestato giuramento nel 1213 al comune di Volterra, vi rimasero fedeli anche dopo che quest’ultimo, nel 1254, fu occupato delle truppe fiorentine.
